Stat 1000: Some tips as you prepare for the exam

Here are some suggestions as you prepare for your exam:
  • Practice with your calculator. Things like binomial stuff should be done in one step. Time yourself when practicing. Your goal is to average 3 minutes per question.
  • On the exam check after every fifth question to see if you see staying on pace. That way it is 15 minutes per every 5 questions. So that means it should be no later than 9:45 after q5, 10:00 after q10, 10:15 after q15, etc. Those of you writing online should write this schedule out ahead of time and refer to it as you finish every fifth question.
  • Go through my Lesson 4 questions 5 and 6 and make sure you are 100% on them. No mistakes allowed. If you make a mistake, start over at Question 5, part (a) and repeat until you never make a mistake. 80% isn't good enough! That means you know enough to fall into all their traps.
  • Once you have mastered those two questions practice the rest of this lesson.
  • On your exam, jot down the z bell curve ladder, x bell curve ladder and the x-bar bell curve ladder (same as x bell curve ladder but with the x-bar standardizing formula at the top as taught in Lesson 7). Those of you writing online should have these written out and ready
  • Go over the practice exams repeatedly. Time yourself. Do a whole exam at one sitting no assistance. Then mark yourself. Remember what questions you felt unsure about and which ones you got wrong. Be honest with yourself.
  • If a weakness appears make sure you play to your strengths on the exam. Don't waste time on questions that you know give you trouble. Deal with those at the end of the exam.
  • Of course try to strengthen your weaknesses and increase your understanding, and, when ready, ‎go through the entire practice exam again, in one sitting no interruptions. Treat the practice exam like an exam, no assistance, 1.5 hours to complete it.  If you don't know something, skip it.  Try to have done each practice exam at least twice.
  • On the real exam, if you don't understand a question, move on.  Never stop and think.  Time is ticking.
  • For "which of the following is true/false" type questions, skim through the choices quickly.  There may be an obvious answer.  Once you have eliminated ones that are obviously wrong, then consider the options that are left.  Never spend more than a couple of minutes on questions like this.  If you are not sure, just guess and move on.  Give yourself time to do the questions you really do understand.
GOOD LUCK! WORK HARD!
